The Sims 3 is the third major title in the life simulation video game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. It is the sequel to The Sims 2. It was announced that it was in development for PlayStation 3 and Wii in November 2006, and later announced for OS X and Microsoft Windows.[7] It was first released on June 2, 2009 simultaneously for OS X and Microsoft Windows – both versions on the same disc. Smartphone versions were also released on June 2, 2009. Console versions were released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS in October 2010 and a month later for the Wii. The Windows Phone version was made available on the Windows Phone Store on October 15, 2010. A Nintendo 3DS version, released on March 27, 2011, was one of its launch titles.[8]
The Sims 3 was a commercial success, selling 1.4 million copies in its first week.[9][10] Critics issued mostly positive reviews, with an 86/100 score from aggregator Metacritic.[11] The game has sold over ten million copies worldwide since its 2009 release, making it one of the best-selling PC games of all time.[12] The last of eleven expansion packs, Into the Future, was released in October 2013. A sequel, The Sims 4, was released in September 2014 for PC and in November 2017 for consoles.

Gameplay[edit]
In The Sims 3. players control their own Sims' activities and relationships. The gameplay is open-ended and doesn't have a defined goal. Challenges occur randomly based on each Sim's lifestyle, like relationships, skills, and jobs. Career opportunities like working overtime or completing tasks can yield a pay raise, cash bonus, or relationship boost. Skill opportunities are the requests by your sim's neighbors or community members for Sims to solve problems using their acquired skills for cash or relationship rewards. If the opportunity is connected to a Sim's school, the reward may be increased school performance.
The new reward system Wishes replaces the Wants and Fears system in its predecessor The Sims 2. Fulfilling a Sim's wish contributes to the Sim's Lifetime Happiness score, allowing players to purchase lifetime rewards for the cost of those Lifetime Happiness points.
The game includes an optional feature called 'Story Progression' which allows all Sims in the neighborhood to autonomously continue free will without the player ever controlling those Sims. Sims live for a set duration of time that is adjustable by the player and advance through several life stages (baby, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult, and elder). Sims can die of old age or they can die prematurely from causes such as fire, starvation, drowning, electrocution. Further causes of death were added in the game's expansion packs.
Create a Sim[edit]
The Sims 3 introduces many more character customization options than its predecessor The Sims 2.
The player has a larger selection of body types for Sims as muscle and body weight sliders have been introduced. However, toddlers do not have the option to have their weight customized. Additional options were added over time in free updates, for example sliders for breast size and muscle definition to coincide with the release of the Late Night expansion pack. The Sims 3 offers a wider range of skin tones than its predecessors, ranging from realistic Caucasian and black skins to fantasy green and purple colors, each skin tone can be further customized with a light to dark slider. The player is able to pick their Sim's shoes, a feature previously limited to console versions of The Sims and The Sims 2.
The base game includes 22 female hairstyles and 17 male hairstyles although many more were made available in later expansion packs, stuff packs and content packs from The Sims 3 Store. Hats and accessories may be applied and may also have their colors and textures altered. Each Sim's hair color can be chosen from one of eight basic colors, or the hair color can be customized using a color wheel to choose the base hair color, roots, highlights or tips.
The Sims 3 offers many more character customization options than its predecessors. With the addition of 'Advanced Mode', players can focus on single features on a characters body to modify, allowing for detailed customization. Players also have the option of giving freckles, beauty marks, and tattoos to their Sims.[13]
The Sims 3 also puts a greater emphasis on custom content and mods with a variety of tools available both in and out of the game to aid mod makers. With the addition of third party mods it is possible to add many more hairstyles and clothing options.
Skills[edit]
There are several skill-dependent abilities, such as more social interactions available from high charisma, special songs for guitar players, and appliance upgrades (self-cleaning, more TV channels, etc.) for high handiness. Sims can begin building skills as early as their toddler days. While skills do not show up in the meter right away, using skill building objects is rewarded once the toddler grows into a child. The basic skills include Logic, Cooking, Painting, Gardening, Writing, Guitar, Athletic, Handiness, Charisma and Fishing. New skills were later added in expansion packs. When Sims reach level 10 of a skill, they will get a certificate in the mail.
Each skill has a tab in the skill journal detailing the level of the skill, statistics, what the challenges are, and sometimes other special information. Various challenges are also available in the skill journal. When a challenge is completed, Sims can earn rewards. All of these rewards earn some kind of benefit, such as quicker completion, better results, etc. With the Ambitions expansion pack, the skill journal also shows hidden skills that a Sim has learned.
Careers[edit]
Many of the careers from The Sims 2, and The Sims, such as the Law Enforcement and Athletic tracks, are in The Sims 3. The careers in the core game are Business, Culinary, Criminal, Journalism, Law Enforcement, Medical, Military, Music, Political, Science, and Professional Sports. Professions in the Ambitions expansion pack include Firefighter, Ghost Hunter, Investigator, Architectural Designer, and Stylist. The part-time jobs available include such positions as a Bookstore Clerk, Grocery Store Clerk, Spa Receptionist, Spa Specialist and a Mausoleum Gravedigger. Part-time jobs have a lower pay than full-time jobs and do not give career opportunities. Part-time jobs are also available for teen Sims after they attend school. The Ambitions expansion pack also introduced professions, careers that allow the player direct control over their Sims' work and how they spend their days, and the ability for Sims to register at City Hall as self-employed in a skill career.
Sims can look for these jobs in the newspaper, the computer, or apply at the 'rabbit hole' building where they would like to work. Sims are also able to make a living at home through their skills such as selling their own paintings, writing novels, playing guitar for tips, or growing fruit and vegetables. Jobs such as nectar making is also a profession with the Sims 3 World Adventures. Sims can also buy out businesses and receive a percentage of the profits they earn.
Advancing in a career still depends on mood and skills, but with the addition that relationships with colleagues/boss and even certain goals that have to be fulfilled. Players now have more control as to their Sims work, with the option to 'Work Hard', 'Take It Easy', 'Suck Up To Boss', etc. Depending upon which of these the Sim is directed affects the performance bar. If the performance bar is maxed out, this will help to increase a Sims chances of being promoted.
A new feature The Sims 3 offers is branching careers, which allows Sims to choose a certain path in their career (such as a Sim in the Music career can eventually choose to specialize in Symphonic music or Rock). These branches are generally offered around level 6 of a career, depending on which career the Sim is working.
Worlds[edit]
Neighborhoods are now being officially referred to as 'worlds', or, when moving, towns, possibly due to Electronic Arts' use of the Create a World tool and the neighborhoods scale. Worlds are now 'seamless', open to exploration between lots and are affected by a new game mechanic called story progression. The primary world in the game is Sunset Valley, while an additional world called Riverview can be obtained for free. All expansion packs to date (except Generations and Seasons) have included a world, and additional worlds can be bought at The Sims 3 Store for sim points.
The Create a World tool allows players to make their own neighborhoods with custom terrains similar to Sim City 4. A game patch, released in conjunction with the release of Ambitions, also allows players to manipulate pre-made neighborhoods to a limited degree, such as adding or removing lots and scenery. As of Late Night, worlds are divided into 'Sims 3 Towns and 'Late Night Towns'. There seem to be important differences between the two, like the Sims they can spawn, etc. Up to now, Bridgeport is the only pre-made world to be cataloged as a city. The rest, including the exotic destinations from World Adventures, are considered suburbs.
On March 19, 2008, EA revealed open world, a new feature, for The Sims 3. Players can explore the world outside their Sims' homes without having to face strenuous loading times. Every house lot is now synchronized with the main neighborhood time. In previous Sims games, the time of day was separate and different for each house lot. Players can interact with every building and amenity in a city. Although players are unable to see inside of certain commercial buildings often called rabbitholes (grocery, bookstore, theater, police station, school, etc.), they are able to enter and retain limited control over their Sims' actions while in these locations. The player has complete control in some other commercial buildings – such as the gym, library and the beach house. All occupied residential buildings can be entered in the same manner as a Sims' home, provided that the buildings are not empty or it is not too late at night.[14]
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version of the game does not have a seamless open world, and gameplay is interrupted by loading screens when players travel to different parts of the world, but when going to work, the player can choose to stay at home to not have to load a new area.
Build/Buy modes[edit]
The build and buy modes have received their own makeover. The square tile outlines that appeared on the ground in previous Sims games' build and buy modes are now a quarter of their original size to give the player more liberty to place objects where they want. Alternatively, it is possible to place objects freely without square tiles, an option that was missing in previous Sims games. Players can re-color and re-pattern the furniture and other items to specific shades and patterns with the new Create-a-Style and make houses with five levels (basements of up to four floors deep).
Build mode is one of three modes in The Sims 3. It is used mainly for construction and architectural work. Some items that would be considered to be in build mode, such as counters and lights, are actually in the buy mode section. Build mode can be used to do many things including adding walls, paint/cover walls, add doors and windows, lay down flooring, create foundations and raised decks, create basements by using either foundations or the Basement tool, add columns and supports, create pools, raise and lower land, create ponds, build gardens and landscape a lot, add fireplaces, add additional floors/stories to a building, add stairs, and add a roof.[15] Some expansion packs released after The Sims 3 add extra build mode features such as ceiling construction and designing the terrain, Players cannot build or place objects outside the limits of the lot. Walls and foundations cannot be placed within one tile of the outer limit of the lot. Fences can be placed all the way up to the edge of the lot and all structures built by the players are limited to five above-ground stories as well as four basement levels. Buildings can be modified to appear to be taller than five stories, either using shells (introduced in Late Night) or by use of the constrainfloorelevation false cheat, which disables the requirement for above-ground floors to be uniform in height and level. There will, however, still be only a maximum of five usable above-ground floors. The height of a section of wall is equal to the length of 3-floor squares. This is most noticeable while placing a 45° roof. It is possible that the length of a game tile is 1 meter, and that the height of a section of wall would then be 3 meters. In some situations, Build mode, as well as Buy mode, may become disabled, such as during a fire, burglary, or other major event. This is done to prevent modifications to the lot that may impact or prevent a game event from occurring. After the event has ended, Build and Buy modes will be re-activated. This feature has been an annoyance to many players and is disabled in many mods. Depreciation of objects is visible in The Sims 3. All objects depreciate 10% as soon as the player exits build mode. This adds realism to the game and gives the player limited tries at building before the costs of building use up too much of the funds intended for furnishing and living expenses. When in build mode, players can return items for full value by using the undo tool.
In Buy mode, the player may purchase items from the catalog, sell objects that are on the current lot, and arrange objects on the current lot. Construction-related elements such as doors, windows, fences, and stairs are not associated with buy mode, but are in build mode.[citation needed] Buy mode largely focuses on furniture and appliances. The descriptions of many of the objects available for purchase in the game (namely the least expensive ones) involve humor, sarcasm, insults towards the player, and wit, and serves as comic relief in the game. For example, one of the cheapest cars available in The Sims 3, the 'Big Lemon', notes that although the car's doors are jammed and its ignition is faulty, it is still worth buying. Another example is the outdoor entertainment item 'Foot-and-Hand Ball' used to train the athletic skill, which references and pokes fun at American football, which, despite its name, rarely involves contact with the ball via the feet. A feature that was introduced in The Sims 2 and stays present currently is the eyedropper tool. When the eyedropper tool is pointed at a wall covering, floor covering, or most objects, will show the name of what it's pointed at. Clicking on a wall or floor covering will switch to the appropriate area of build mode and select that covering so it can be applied. Clicking on an object will make an exact duplicate of it, and will focus the catalog on that object.[16] The family inventory is a space where objects that are too large to be held in a Sim's personal inventory are kept. Certain opportunities may make an object available in the Family Inventory. When a Sim family moves, if 'pack furniture' is selected, all objects in the household will be placed in the Family inventory, to be moved and rearranged in the new house.
Introduced in patch 42, blueprint mode (a subset of the build mode), allows players to choose from pre-made rooms. A player can place down blueprints anywhere furniture can go, and after 'realizing' them, have the blueprints automatically laid out.
Create a World[edit]
On October 29, 2009, Electronic Arts announced 'Create a World' (CAW), which is a game world editor that allows players to create their own custom cities from scratch for use within the game. Players can customize lots, choose terrain patterns and add roads, vegetation and neighborhood accents (such as water towers and lighthouses). CAW also allows players to import designs from PNG files for use in their worlds. Users can upload their worlds to The Sims 3 Exchange for download by other players. The editor tool is offered to players as a separate download (156MB), and was released on December 16, 2009 as a beta version. EA will offer technical support and updates. Players are able to share their neighborhoods as with other content. The Create A World tool is currently only available for Windows-based PCs.[17]
Development[edit]
Electronic Arts first announced The Sims 3 on March 19, 2008.[18] The game was developed at Maxis located in Redwood Shores, California. On January 15, 2009, EA invited 'some of the best' custom content creators to their campus at Redwood Shores where they were hosting a Creator's Camp. Creators have been invited to spend the week exploring and creating content like Sims, houses and customized content. The Creators' work was used to pre-populate The Sims 3 Exchange. In the seventh expansion pack for The Sims 2, The Sims 2: FreeTime, an event occurs in which a Sim-version of Rod Humble, the head of The Sims franchise, gives the player's Sim family an unopened gift box. When opened, the family gets a computer with The Sims 3 on it. The Sims 3 game cannot be bought in the catalog. Sims can then play The Sims 3 on their computers or console systems. Like all the other games that Sims can play in The Sims 2, The Sims 3 is a looping gameplay video shown on the player's Sim's computer screens when played by a Sim. On July 15, 2008 the first video preview of The Sims 3 appeared on the official website as did seven new screenshots and five Create-A-Sim screens. Four screenshots that appeared on the website and were then taken down soon after, leaked onto the Internet by a member of the community.
Copies of the video game Spore also came packaged with fliers advertising the game, with information stating whole-neighborhood accessibility and endless possibilities on character creation. On October 31, 2008, two teaser trailers were released by Electronic Arts featuring a comical view on the 2008 presidential election in the United States. Candidates John McCain and Barack Obama were included along with respective running mates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. In the eighth expansion pack of The Sims 2, The Sims 2: Apartment Life, new objects were added including logo posters and framed screenshots. The game was shipped with a code and an Internet address, where the player could download clothing with The Sims 3 logo on it. Another developer walk through was released on November 6, 2008, featuring in-depth previews of the neighborhood and Create-A-Sim.
On May 8, 2009, EA announced that The Sims 3 had gone gold meaning that the game had finished beta testing stage and was off for manufacturing ahead of its June 2009 release. On May 15, 2009 EA released some online interactive teaser experiences on The Sims 3 Website, including 'SimFriend', which allows users to choose a virtual Sim Friend who would email them throughout the day. 'SimSocial', which allows users to create their own Sim online, and have an adventure with them. 'SimSidekick', which allows users to surf the web with a sim. Two weeks before the game was scheduled to be released, an unauthorized copy of the digital distribution version of the game leaked onto the Internet.[19] EA later commented the leak was a 'buggy, pre-final' version. EA claims that more than half of the game is missing and is susceptible to crashes or worse.[20] Reportedly, the title has seen higher copyright infringement rates than that of the most torrented game of 2008, Spore.[21]
Developing Team: Bringing the Game to Life[edit]
The development team was faced with bringing the game to life and pleasing the community of players who were familiar with the original Sims games and wanted something fresh. In order to get the community involved and bring life into a programmed world they relied on user feedback and inspiration from the real world to harness into a digital space.[22] In order to create the animations in the game, so they look believable but goofy, they shot real life references of people doing tasks in outrageous ways until satisfied with the outcome.[23]
This use of real world influence can be seen in the World Adventures where they have three worlds (each world represents China, Egypt, and Paris) and the Katy Perry branded expansion and stuff packs which feature Katy Perry in Sims form and an array of different items themed to candy and food.
The Sims team also brought in music artists to perform some of their songs in the language of Sims, Simlish. The music taste of Sims is just as diverse in game as it is in real life and the developers sought people from all musical backgrounds to record songs for in game. This not only brings in another real world aspect to the game but it is also an exclusive honor given to those chosen by the development team; these artists have ranged from Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum, Flaming Lips, Damien Marley, Depeche Mode, Nelly Furtado, and even Flo Rida.[24] The recordings for the Simlish versions of the songs can also be found on the official Sims team YouTube channel, The Sims.
Story Creation for Game Play[edit]
The stories that the developers intertwine in the Sims 3, that the players then interact with, is what also makes the Sims feel more like a simulation of life. The developers understand that 'one of the coolest things about the Sims 3 is that my story is part of a bigger story, the neighborhood is growing and changing around me and my characters and the story I'm telling is affected by that...'[23] and from all of this cross story mixing comes a new player experience. These stories create immersion in the game for the players and those who play the game can start sharing some of their funny experiences in the game with people in the real world; thus bringing in players who have never even considered playing video games before.[25]
Each character in the game that was specifically created by the developers have their own life story, wishes, dreams, and personalities. The developers spend a lot of time trying to get the world to feel seamless and the characters to feel real[25] but they do not forget about the Sims and homes they populate the game with before release. One of the most well known and even infamous families in The Sims 3 would be The Goths, who have been written into the game's lore since the beginning of The Sims in 2000. The players have fallen in love with the mystery and lore of the Goth family and many people have taken it into their own hands to speculate on what really happened to the family.[26]
The developers want the players to be able to take the game and make their own individual worlds, characters and stories.
Marketing[edit]
In April 2009, Electronic Arts began to post billboards in many areas in advertisement for the game. Many of the billboards covered skyscrapers in densely populated areas, most notably Times Square in New York City.[27] The costs of these billboards was estimated to be $10 million a month. This marketing campaign proved successful, as The Sims 3 sold 1.4 million copies in its first week, breaking the record for all EA games.
On March 23, 2009, the look and feel of The Sims 3 was threaded throughout the storyline of an episode of The CW seriesOne Tree Hill. On screen, the episode opens in an idealized Sims version of One Tree Hill and then transitions into the real Tree Hill. As this episode plays out, Sims versions of popular One Tree Hill characters are introduced and then morph into the real-life characters, including Dan (Paul Johansson), Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Peyton (Hilarie Burton).[28]
The Sims 3 versions of the characters are available for download via CW's official website. On April 19, 2009, Target exclusively released a promotional disc of The Sims 3 that features a Ladytron band poster, The Sims 3 theme song music download, and a $5 off coupon. The main menu includes screensaver downloads, videos, Create-A-Sim, Create-A-House, and much more. There is no actual gameplay involved, but it describes what playing feels like.
On July 14, 2010, Ford Motor began a promotion at The Sims 3 Store by allowing players to download their newest car at the time, the Ford Fiesta Mark VII.[29] The car also came with a collection of street signs. On October 27, 2010, the download was updated to include the Fiesta Hatchback.[30] The 2012 Ford Focus was made available to download on June 8, 2011.[31] The car included one male Ford T-shirt, one female Ford T-shirt, a stereo, and a set of neon lights, all for use in-game. The Focus pack was available to download on Mac, PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms.
Audio[edit]
Music for The Sims 3 was composed by Steve Jablonsky. Scores were recorded with the Hollywood Studio Symphony at Newman Scoring Stage at 20th Century Fox.[32] Music for the game's stereo and guitar objects was produced by others, including Darrell Brown, Rebeca Mauleon, and Peppino D'Agostino. Additional music was produced by APM Music.[33] Two soundtracks have been released for The Sims 3 base game, The Sims 3 Soundtrack and The Sims 3 – Stereo Jams. The soundtrack includes theme music and the Stereo Jams album includes music from stereos in game. All songs on Stereo Jams are in Simlish.

Software copy restriction[edit]
Some of EA's other PC titles from the same time period, such as Spore and Dead Space, used a SecuROM copy restriction scheme that requires online and offline authentication and limits the number of times a user can install the game to five. While it was speculated that The Sims 3 would use the same system, on March 26, 2009, executive producer Rod Humble revealed that The Sims 3 uses traditional disk-based copy protection as Sims 2 did and does not require online authentication to install. A product key is also required. However, SecuROM based restriction is still present within the digital version of the title, limiting users to a total of 5 authorizations for 5 different machines via online activation, each of which can be de-authorized online at any time. A legitimate serial key is required to download custom objects and Sims from the official website. This includes custom designs created by other Sims 3 players as well as additional content from EA.
Delay[edit]
On February 3, 2009, it was announced that the release date of The Sims 3 would be delayed from February 20, 2009 to June 2, 2009 in the US, and June 5, 2009 in the UK. John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, said 'In the case of [The Sims 3], we're moving this title to June 2 to give us additional time to build the worldwide marketing campaign a title like this deserves'. Grant Rodiek, Associate Producer of The Sims 3 said:
The Sims 3 June launch gives more time for tuning and polish and the ability to launch the game on PC and Mac platforms simultaneously. This is a key EA franchise and title and it deserves a bigger bet on the best Sims game EA has made. These last few months will give us a little more time to tune, tweak, and polish the game. Our players have been waiting for something awesome and that's exactly what we intend to give them.[36]
Release[edit]
EA Singapore launched The Sims 3 with a large launch party[37] which was held on June 2, 2009 at the new shopping mall Iluma in Singapore. At the event, The Sims 3 T-shirts were available for purchase. In Sydney, Australia on June 4, 2009 a fashion event to show off the freedom and self-expression in The Sims 3 was held by Electronic Arts Australia, and included a performance by Jessica Mauboy.[38]
The game was released as both a standard edition and a Collector's Edition. Both the collector's edition and the standard edition of the game comes with a coupon for 1000 Sim Points to spend at The Sims 3 Store.[39] The standard edition contains the first release of the core game, while the Collector's Edition includes the Sims 3 core game, a 2GB The Sims PlumbobUSB flash drive (preloaded with wallpapers and screensavers of the game, and the main theme as an MP3 file) with matching Green Carabiner, an exclusive European-styled Sports Car download, a Prima Tips and Hints Guide (not the actual Sims 3 Prima Guide), and Plumbob stickers. Those that pre-ordered the game also got a Vintage Sports Car download, The Sims 3 Neighborhood Poster, and a quick start reference guide.[40] A preview CD with more information about The Sims 3, such as music samples, family descriptions, and career information, was also released.[41]
Smartphone[edit]
A version of The Sims 3 was released on iOS, Android, Bada, Symbian, BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone on June 2, 2009. The iPhone game works similar to that of the PC version. In Create-a-Sim, instead of Lifetime Wishes, there are personas. Personas decide which lifetime wishes your sim will have, as a persona is the largest factor in a Sim's personality. Sims start out with a small house. The house can be expanded every five sim days if the player can afford it.[42] There are four careers in the town: biology, politics, business, and culinary. As in the PC version, Sims can also learn skills. There are nearly 75 wishes in the game.[43] When all of them are fulfilled, Sims unlock the criminal career and have the ability to purchase a car. In some events, such as appliances breaking down, the player must play a minigame to solve or do the action. The game was updated on November 30, 2010, to add support for the Retina display of newer devices.
An expansion pack for the iOS version, World Adventures, was released on April 2, 2010. Unlike expansion packs for the PC, this is a standalone application. World Adventures adds tombs, new challenges, personas, and careers, new places to explore (Egypt, China and France), clothes and new furniture. A second expansion pack, Ambitions, was released on September 16, 2010.[44] As with World Adventures, the game was a standalone application. Ambitions added new skills (firefighting, painting, parenting and sports), new community buildings, and the ability to have children. On November 6, 2009, EA announced the release of a vampire theme pack for the iPhone. The pack included Live it or Wear it Sets with Vampires and Werewolves, Castle and Campus Life themes. 'Live it' sets contain car, furniture, decoration, wallpaper, and flooring.[45] 'Wear it' sets contain clothing, new CAS options, and hair styles.
Console[edit]
The Sims 3 was released to game consoles on October 26, 2010, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS and the Wii platform on November 15, 2010. The game was released for Nintendo 3DS on March 25, 2011.[46]
The game allows the player to take on up to three friends in the Life Moments Game on the Wii, upload and download content on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, including furnishings, houses, and player creations or experience a full life simulation on a handheld with Nintendo DS. Reviews for the game ranged from average to moderately positive. Sims can age and die, but life cycles can be disabled optionally as well.[47]The Sims 3 features a new Karma system (similar to the influence system in The Sims 2).[46] Sims can interact with child Sims around the neighborhood, or have children of their own.[48] Unlike the PC version of the game, the console versions have loading times when moving from one area to another, and when accessing build / buy modes.[49]
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions received mostly positive reviews. On Metacritic, it holds an average score of 77 and 76 out of 100 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, respectively.[citation needed]Game Informer gave the 360 and PS3 versions a 9/10, praising the new Karma system and The Exchange. GameSpot gave the game a 7/10, noting that 'the game lacks fluidity, but is fun in its own right.'[50] In a positive review, IGN praised the game for its controls on consoles, but said they were disappointed by the fact that there is only one town in the game, as well as bugs, including a glitch where the game will not save once a certain week has been reached.

The Sims 3 Store[edit]
The Sims 3 Store is an online store where players of The Sims 3 can purchase and download content for their game online for additional fees. To date, unlike its counterpart for The Sims 2, The Sims 3 Store only offers exclusive objects, clothing, skins, and hairstyles not found through any other medium. The Store also offers variants of special objects found in expansions (such as laundry and hot-tubs), which offer their features for players who haven't purchased those expansions. The store is updated with new items for purchase every month. Premium content, such as the foot massage chair and wind chimes,[62] add new gameplay or animations. The update of August 2014 is the last.
The store uses a point system in which players can purchase additional SimPoints using a credit card or Points Card, which may be purchased at retail stores or via the Origin online store. It was launched on June 4, 2009 to coincide with the launch of the game. Players can download purchased items using the game launcher or the Store Mode interface found within the game itself. When a user purchases additional SimPoints, they obtain an object in the game for buying SimPoints.
Several worlds and towns for players to play in have been published on The Sims 3 Store:

EA reported that in its first week, The Sims 3 sold 1.4 million copies. According to EA, this was the most successful PC game launch the company had ever had to date.[73] According to retail data trackers Gfk Australia The Sims 3 has been the top selling game in Australia from release until June 30, 2009.[74] Response from critics and gamers alike were generally favorable, with Metacritic calculating a score of 86/100 based on 75 reviews.[11]PC Gamer awarded The Sims 3 a 92% and an Editor's Choice badge, calling it 'The best Sims game yet'.[75]IGN PC awarded The Sims 3 an 8.9/10, stating:
This is simply a better playing Sims experience, and once you experience the freedom to hit the town without hitting a load screen you'll be hard-pressed to go back to any of the earlier games. Blowing up the size of the game was certainly a risk, but it was a sensible and overdue one, and kudos to EA for recognizing that the decade-old formula needed some growth. And while there's still plenty of room for more innovation, we'll settle for The Sims 3 for now. It delivers a solid foundation for what should be many more years of Sims sales dominance.
GameSpot awarded The Sims 3 a score of 9.0/10, the review praised the game: 'The latest Sims game is also the greatest, striking a terrific balance between the fresh and the familiar.'[68]
The game was ranked #91 in IGN's 'Top 100 Modern Games'.[76] In a special edition of Edge magazine, listing their 100 top videogames of all-time, The Sims 3 was number 89 on the list.[77]
On May 6, 2013, EA confirmed The Sims 4 would be released in 2014.[78] The game was released in North America on September 2, 2014.[79]

With so many versions of The Sims released over the years, you would be forgiven for thinking they’re all the same. This isn’t the case. Over the years, with each release, new features have been added, and others have been removed.
For some players, this has been a problem, with many sticking with The Sims 3. For others, though, The Sims 4 is the pinnacle of the series. But which is best? And what are the big differences between The Sims 4 and The Sims 3?
The Sims 3 vs. The Sims 4
The Sims 4 added quite a few new features over its predecessor. Of course, the games were released five years apart (The Sims 3 in 2009 and The Sims 4 in 2014), and the differences are based on hardware advances as much as they are on improving the gaming experience.
However, many popular features have been removed or revised in The Sims 4. The differences between The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 include:
- New Create-a-Sim Tool
- Cross Neighborhood Travel
- More Emotion-Driven Gameplay
- Flexible Building Tools
- Brand New Game Engine
- Say “Goodbye” to Create-a-Style
- No More Toddlers and Swimming Pools
- New DLC to Spend Your Money On
Let’s look at these key differences between The Sims 3 and The Sims 4.

Sims 3 Ps3 Videos
1. New Create-a-Sim Tool
The Create-a-Sim tool lets you make custom Sims characters that resemble family, friends, celebrities, or even characters from your imagination. In The Sims 4, the experience is more tactile and intuitive than ever before.
Rather than tweaking sliders to shape characters, features can be manipulated by clicking on frames and faces, dragging bellies to make them wider or thinner, or tugging them up or down to make them taller or shorter.
Even fine features like eye angles, cheek bones, and lip shapes are all edited this way.
Personalities are different, too. The Sims 3’s character traits have been reduced from five to four; gone are rarely-picked, highly specific traits. The Sims 4 introduces traits that affect more aspects of life and gameplay. There’s also an animation style, from a confident swagger to a primitive hunch, to match their identity.
2. Cross-Neighborhood Travel
Travelling to other neighborhoods in The Sims 3 was a clumsy proposition. Basically, it involved freezing time for everyone in the main neighborhood while one group left for a new adventure. In The Sims 4, things are far simpler.
Not only are other neighborhoods and future special worlds (like the University and World Adventures areas from The Sims 3) just a short loading screen away, but you’ll be able to make regular trips without compromising a commonsense timeline.
In The Sims 4, your sim can easily commute to the city for work and make it home at night.
3. More Emotion-Driven Gameplay
Like its predecessors, The Sims 3 focuses gameplay around the desires and moods of your sims.
With The Sims 4, the emotional state of the sims is a bigger part of the game. Here, you can understand their moods just by looking at their faces.
This can have major implications on social interactions. For example, a sim who is feeling down will need some cheering up before they can hope to succeed at more cheerful or ambitious endeavors.
While it’s easy to spot when sims don’t get along in The Sims 3, the sequel combines this with ambitions to award bonuses. Sims are basically rewarded for being unpleasant (although the same system also awards perks to creative sims when they feel inspired).
The key difference here is a reduction in “interaction spamming”—the pre-programming of a set of interactions. This is often used in sim-to-sim romantic situations in The Sims 3.
4. Flexible Building Tools
The Sims 3 and its sequel both feature impressive building tools. Armchair architects will love The Sims 4’s prefabricated rooms (a feature added to The Sims 3 via an expansion pack). The Sims 3’s building tool is an aspect that still seems rooted in the original game.
Meanwhile, more forgiving building rules in The Sims 4 let you move poorly placed homes. New wall heights make vaulted ceilings easier without workarounds. You can even snap full rooms free of the main structure to rearrange your house’s layout.
No more dragging one object at a time when you decide you want the bathroom and bedroom to swap positions.
5. Brand New Game Engine
Expansions have been released for every version of The Sims, extending the gameplay with new skins and items and locations.
With The Sims 3, once you add a few expansions it sadly becomes the Frankenstein’s monster of video games. Neighborhoods get glitchy when they interact with content they weren’t future proofed to handle, and crashes become frustratingly common.
While some mods alleviate the worst of the problems, running too many can have similarly unexpected results.
The Sims 4 features a whole new game engine which is more stable. Some different issues have arisen, however, such as player-built mods requiring an update following game updates.
6. Say “Goodbye” to Create-a-Style
The Sims 3’s Create-A-Style tool allows players to drag choices from a library of patterns onto furniture and clothing. These items can then be recolored to your liking.
Want a zebra striped couch? Pick the couch model of your choice and drag it on. Then make it offensively garish by subbing hot pink and sky blue in for the black and white.
Sadly, this simple, powerful tool is absent in The Sims 4.
7. No More Toddlers and Swimming Pools
One of the key features introduced in The Sims 2 was babies aging into toddlers and then children. This was carried into The Sims 3, but the feature is missing from The Sims 4. Also absent is the sight of sims swimming.
While developers claimed the feature removals were to prioritize work on more interesting content, it means that the only way to create Sims with a full lifespan is to play The Sims 3.
8. New DLC to Spend Your Money On
The Sims games have long been sustained by downloadable content (DLC). The Sims 3 saw 11 full expansions, 9 stuff packs of themed furniture and clothing, 10 standalone neighborhoods, and thousands of objects available via microtransactions.
As with previous versions, however, The Sims 3 DLC is incompatible with The Sims 4.
On one hand, it’s unreasonable to expect a newer game to have content parity with its predecessor. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine playing The Sims 3 without its rich diversity of content.
Of course, DLC is available for The Sims 4, but again, this isn’t backwards compatible.

I miss the fully open worlds along with World Adventures, plus the largest lot in Sims 3 is 60x60. But Adventures is pretty much mandatory for me. So sticking to Sims 3 mostly.
Sadly, Sims 3 loves to crash like crazy. Upping the RAM barely works, now I need to fix the CPU usage. But it has more stuff anyway, so I am putting up with it.Sims 5 should be a combo of Sims 4 improvements and all that, but some of the stuff from Sims 3, maybe even a bit of Sims 2, and the big open worlds. And 80x80 or even 100x100 lots, for a MASSIVE manor! Or a castle!
The sims 5 should be the sims 3 and the sims 4 put together (including expansion packs, exc.) included. That would be the best sims.
Sims 4 is crap.... slow crashes. No artificial intelligence. Cannot manage long witout control. Cheats don't seem to work but money cheats. Nude patc woohoo might be cause. Too much time for badic f...n needs. Expansions failrd to install.
Sims4 has something good but sims3 is much better wish sims 5 will be the besr
I guess it's just good to know I'm not the only one who isn't even remotely satisfied with how this game turned out. But my Sims 3 is super clunky so I've been playing it. The Sim feature manipulation is better, the events and interactions are cool, but everything else is way to simplified. Not enough detail editing, I never use the pre furnished rooms, ever, and the camera is its own matter. It's as if the creators said, 'We know this camera sucks, so let's give em the Sims 3 one too.' I guess I just don't feel like this game was created for me. What I would like to see is a blend of 3 and 4. Tending toward 3.
Played sims 4 for at least 3 hours after making sims, having gone this far i am taking it back to the store. Its gameplay quality is horrible compared to base sims 3. there is no freedom. i miss the toddler stage in children I have to start in the overly obnoxious infant stage or jump past the fun to children? No teaching my baby to walk talk or potty having the fun taking the toddler on a picknick?
Second the edit tool. By far the BEST feature of sims 3, isn't here and from what I read and have looked up, will not be put in sims 4? kind of seems like a huge error to me. Even if the goal was to market this to younger people. that is ALL my niece or my younger brother do, is EDIT furniture and other items for hours. I have a sims 3 city made of houses they all designed completely. it's such a huge let down to not have that power even a little in sims 4.
The whole building movement is crappy./ and frustrating.
The lack of freedom is annoying, and honestly the way the business and working is, is even more annoying :/
After playing The sims 4, I can safely say I won't be buying another sims game for a long time. Big waist of time.

Just experienced the first 4 Sims 4's Expansions and here's what i currently think....
The Sims 3 is still GREATLY better than the Sims 4 for these reasons:
1 - The Sims 4 Map is a Disapointment you can't Zoom in or Zoom out, looks like a Puzzle without any Realistic Touch unlike the GREAT Sims 3 Map which is FAR more Realistic and Entertaining
2 - In the Sims 3 we have this Great thing called ' Freedoom ' and i mean by that going wherever we want, having more spaces to plant, Building and many others...
The Sims 4 sadly and whatever this strange decision about limiting this Freedom doesn't really make the Sims 4 more like a ' Real World '
3 - Building Houses, Rotating Objects and Walls Cutaway View in the Sims 4 are also one of those problems.... the Walls Up View - End are far better in Sims 3 we can see what our Sims are doing clearly hwv it's the opposite in the Sims 4 the Walls are just too High and REALLY annoying not to mention the Compexity of Rotating Objects
Sims 4 has Great Graphics, Options and events not to mention this Great thing about working inside our Workplace in a really Amazing Entertaining way
I think this is the only Great thing about the Sims 4 tbh but currently the Sims 3 takes it by FAR in my opinion ' if ' in case they can found a way to balance those problems with a Great Expansion unlike any otherThe Sims 3 MOD quality blows THE SIMS 3 out of the water compared to SIMS 4. It seems more that the newer version is set up for younger generations as the SIMS 3 and Mods/Graphics and the way it functions and is set up can be for everyone. I don't know if I like the MAJOR CARTOON look as much... in fact... 11 years later, I'm still playing The Sims 3... and still having conquered everything. They should SHOCK US, and give us something more similar with the same layout, and more features. I miss that. I feel like I'm 5 when I play THE SIMS 4.
i have playe the sims 3 before and honestly i have to say the sims 4 is i guess u can say more free'er' then the sims 3. You can do things u could never do on the sims 3. And am super happy of my purchase
How are you more free in the sims 4.. And they also cut out a lot of stuff from the sims 3. It really seems like you haven't played before and you just want attention.
Here's the sad truth that most Sims players don't realise (because many started at 3, fewer at 2, and even less at 1). Most features in the Sims games are recycled content. There is no innovation. Sure, Sims 4 optimised a lot of things, but did they really? We are talking about Electronic Arts here. You can't spell 'steal' without 'EA'. Sims 4 simply compartmentalised the entire game - instead of having an entire map simulate, only a section of it (a neighbourhood) simulates (i.e. Willow Creek).
The concept of DLCs is probably the silliest thing I've seen. Sims 3 was the most guilty of this. There were many features added into the game later in the form of DLC, but in reality, these were either direct clones of content found in Sims 2, just released several years after the release of Sims 3. So you have to wonder how much work was really put into Sims 4 because the last few games are very much copy-and-paste, simply translated to work with a supposedly new engine.
That being said, most video companies are guilty of this (like Guild Wars 2, a disturbing amount of content is simply copy-pasted from Guild Wars 1). There is nothing wrong with copy-and-paste because it's part of building a memorable legacy for the franchise. It is a problem when it's monetisation that foregoes the original mantra of 'making games to make money', not 'making money to make games'.
Lol. No world editing, no cars, no toddlers, teens are adults, less traits, no public buildings ( city hall, book store etc, Testingcheats not that useful, no cool expansion packs. Sims 4 is shit
Long live sims 3.the sims 4 is shit I much love the sims 3
I've been debating getting 4 but I really couldn't get on with sims 3 personally. Sticking with sims 2 for now!
I think that Sims 4 is a big mistake, I love the create a style, watching my Toddlers grow up even seeing them as kids having fun in pools. My neighbour plays 4 and she loves it, But she never played 1,2 and 3 first to get the hang of it but then again I made the same mistake by jumping straight to 3 when it came out, only I bought my copy a year later and I've loved it ever since, at time of posting this, I now own the base game four expansion packs and three stuff packs and hoping to plan more, I'm nineteen and I don't have a job yet as I'm still looking, but I can't afford the games like most people, but I'm building my collection up slowly.
I think Maxis/EA have made a huge mistake with 4, taking pieces that were in 3 and not including them in 4, when I heard about this I was a bit disappointed but my neighbour's asking me to try it but I've told her 'I'm a Sims 3 player and always will be, 2010 till never'
I have played sims series from the first instalment.
When sims 2 came out, i was dissapoined by the lack of content (cos not addons yet) but the imrovements were amazing - life stages, gradual growing, cars... The game was amazing.
When sims 3 came out, i again was dissapointed by the lack of content, but improvements were amazing again - you could just WALK to the neighbour house next door! In the sims 2 you had to sit through 2 loading screens (1 from hous to the map, then from the map to the house). Actually driving from work, and stopping at the cafe on the way - the world became the whole and smooth. It was the pinnacle of freedom.
When sims 4 came out i... that is... Game became CLEARLY WORSE. Its no lack of content - the core mechanics are made worse! The freeroaming is gone! Instead of neighborhood you get stupid 2d map?? You cant even change it! No toddlers?? Are you kidding me? We are back to sims 1??
After playing the masterpiece that sims 3 is, i cant even touch that pile of trash sims 4 is.You took the words right out of my head! This is exactly why I haven't made the transition to Sims 4. I've been playing the sims since it came out in 2000 when I was 10 years olds and the game was amazing to me at the time. I've seen this game evolve over years to this wonderful world of endless opportunity and creativity. I was so excited about the sims 4 before it came out and it was very disappointing to hear that the sims 4 sounds like a fancier sims 1 game. It took me a while to get use to sims 3 but I can honestly say that it is the best so far! I feel the only people who love the sims 4 are people who never played sims 1, 2, 3 because this is all they know
correction i have played all the sims exept the sims 1, and i find it more fun then the sims 3. I miss toddlers but the kids certinaly make up for it!
The SAME thing i was thinking
Just experienced Sims 4 yesterday and can tell the BIG sadly difference btw it and Sims 3
Sims 3 is FAR better.... Great Graphics, Great play, Entertainment at max
Now it's like playing a lesser version of Sims 3 but with only one difference which is working inside the Worplace and nothing else
Pools are back just so you know. I love TS4 and I spent a lot of time playing TS3. I do really think you'd like it, it's a really great game but it's fine to stick to what you know!
The pool in build mode is there didn't they mean carpool?
Maybe they had second thaughts and add the pool tool even added an octagonal pool tool.
I like sims 4 because its brighter on your screen, But I Miss TODLERS. I also like the star wars ouitfits
Please, buy Sims 4. This will allow EA to make money, pay programmers to create expansions for the next 3 years, and then smart gamers will buy the Complete Edition with all 20 expansions and stuff packs for 30$. And THEN compare it to Sims 3 with 20 expansions. ;) Have a nice day!
no, id rather pirate it ;) Have a nice day!
But... that's forBIDDEN!
What did you use? My brother tried to pirate it but he said it wouldn't work.. Any advice???
There was no complete edition for Sims 3. I wouldn't count on seeing one for the fourth game either. If you don't a VPN or seedbox, then I hope you a have a big wallet.
I hope Google will unblock your account someday and you'll be able to search for Sims 3 Complete Edition, instead of posting pointless comments on the internet.
i brought the sims 4 recently and it had a HUGE sale around 50% OFF so the game costed arould $25 i think
no offense but that guy dmitry on is right. unfortunately, it's only for pc but its got the base sims 3 and then 20 packs (the sims 3: ambitions; the sims 3: world adventures; the sims 3: late night; the sims 3: generations; the sims 3: pets; the sims 3: showtime; the sims 3: supernatural; the sims 3: seasons; the sims 3: university life; the sims 3: island paradise; the sims 3: into the future; outdoor living stuff; fast lane stuff; katy perry stuff; town life stuff; high end loft stuff; master suite stuff; diesel stuff; 70's, 80's & 90's stuff; movie stuff). god knows why they thought people wanted katy perry expansion packs, since you know, we're all fourteen-year-old girls, but whatever.
The sims 4 just seems like such a downgrade from the sims 3. To be honest, I don't care much for toddlers but it just seems stupid for a baby to age up to a child. There's also just a lot missing from the base game, that was included in the sims 3.
Some of the things I miss the most, is the fact that you're sims we're so much more personal! You were able to choose like what 5 traits for your adult sim? In the sims 4 you can choose 3! 3 traits! And there's not even a lot of traits to choose from! Your sims quickly become the most dull and boring people ever! Of course CAS, building, and graphics were heavily upgraded but the creators has to realize that not everyones favourite part is cas! I didn't give a *** about it when I first played the sims 3, and I sure as hell still don't in the sims 4! But it seems as it's suddenly becoming the most important part of the game since the gameplay is absolutely boring! I can live with no open world, but NO story progression? Are you actually kidding me? I loved the sims 3 for all the little details such as story progression! You were able to be so much more creative with Create-A-Style in TS3 CAS, but now the whole thing has become a boring chore. You're able to choose out of maybe 18 different hair colours, and you're so limited when it comes to clothing!
Everyone is always complaining about the base game TS3 content like clothing, but you had the possibility to make it super creative and your own! Maybe the clothes was ugly, but you were able to change the colours! It seems like such a tiny detail, yet it's so important!
Also the freaking expansion packs they're coming out with? Get Together is way overrated! Clubs? Really? Just give us pets and seasons and we'll be happy! If anyone is reading this and thinking of buying TS4.. Don't!
TS4 is absolutely boring and unplayable without modding the game, and we shouldn't have to do that! A sims game should be good even without cc and mods, but this shit is just ridiculous!
The sims 2 was amazing and that didn't even have a trait system or open world, but it still managed to be better than The sims 4. The sims 3 was a great upgrade from the sims 2, and then they give us this?! I'd rather have TS3 with no expansions than TS4 with all of the current ones.
Sorry for this rant, but I am seriously so freaking mad about this!sorry for the grammar mistakes, I was typing fast and I was very annoyed aha
Also everything is so unpersonal.
In the sims 3, the teens were super fun to play with and they actually felt like teens. The children were also way better, but now teens are like exactly the same as adults and the children are just boring.
thank you a lot, you have really helped me out. I was debating on buying it, but was worried when I seen how they have changed things. i hate when theyy focus on more less important things. its always been about playing with life...thats was their phrase for the sims for so many years! I just don't understand why they would take away more realistic things about creating a real person
Very insightful, thank you. I know how frustrating it can be lol.
I've played all the Sims games. 2 was by far the best! 3 added some cool things like the Island and creation for items. What I've read so far on Sims 4, there is no way I would buy that. I'll wait for 5, if 3 holds in there until then. Already crashes every hour and takes FOREVER to load.
I wonder wat 5 will bring maybe its better but sims 4 is already to perfection, i miss toddlers but children make up for it! But of course we have to wait 5 years till the next game
Okay... Long time Sims player. When Sims 4 was announced, I was excited. It promised of fluid multi-tasking, expanded base game play with greater interactions, and a vast world to explore. Sadly, only the multi-tasking is what came of this. Which is amazing but so incredibly under utilized within the game engine. One feature of Sims 3 that I enjoyed was building apartments and colonies of multi-family dwellers together on one property. Sims 4 multi-taking properties could have easily expanded on this by allowing the 'tenants' of the property intermingle. Not to mention the missing pets. The upgrade in graphics could have allowed for Sims to have co-existing pets without the glitches that were common in S3. And while I could have done without the Seasons component, having the expansion and ability to change with the weather was nice as was the 'holiday' items that one could decorate with.
All-in-all, Sims 3 became a very complex and highly interactive game. What fans got was a dumbed down version of the game for the sake of some extra shininess and a CAS system that was (by any sense of the means) an improvement. That's not to say that some of the changes aren't interesting and useful in their own right. It's just that these things seem to have come at the expense of being able to play in a vast Simlish world that was complex and intriguing. It was world that held out attention for several hours on end, rather than just long enough for the novelty to end.
Majorly disappointed in that it's been over a year since the release of the game and yet I still dislike it. I have bought everything EA has released: Get to Work; Get Together; Cool Kitchen stuff; ect. Yet I still find myself immensely bored out of my mind after half an hour!
Enter the Sims 3. I used to not think toddlers were a big deal in the Sims 3, however, the lack of them in the Sims 4 shows an obvious change. Sims 4 children bore me to death! A baby (trapped in a crib for days) finally ages up into something that leaves for school, comes home, does its homework, and then what? They play outside on the monkey bars, talk to kids at school... and that's pretty much it!
Emotions are repetitive and also boring. One thing I will give to EA, though, is multitasking. There is no way to express how easy it is now to take care of their needs now.
Something you think isn't a big deal but is, would be parties! They now start immediately, which is insanely annoying. Now you cannot even change the dress code!
I'm awaiting pets, actually. Screw 'Get to Work', which added only THREE JOBS. I'll be okay with the missing toddlers, BUT I NEED PETS TO BE ABLE TO FUNCTION. The graphics are perfect for pets!
I have to say I am not a life long sim player but after having sims 3 for 6 months now I couldn't possibly see switching to sims 4 even with the slow progress it has been making for better content. I have all the expansion packs (curtsy an awesome online deal I found for dirt cheap) and run all of them along with over 4gb of mod packages and custom contents. I have only once experienced a crash in the hours I have logged playing it and that was after it had been up and running for about 7 hours. (Probably should have went to bed). It does take more then a few minutes to launch (I tend to get a snack or put in a load of laundry while it launches). But once it is up and running I don't have many issues with speed. In the time logged though I have to say close to 50% of it has just been customizing houses, lots, and sims. I'm not sure I even remember what the original Sunset Valley looks like anymore. And to me that's what I enjoy the most out of a game. I could handle modding the 'cartoonish' sims4 sims into something a bit more life like but the fact that they took out a ton of the customization ability from sims 3. That and the fact that I still have yet to explore all of the world adventure areas (Just finished france and have to do china) and haven't even experienced island life because i have been too caught up in everything else there is to do and imagine.
I have the sims 3 and I've been playing it for a year and a half, but I have got bored of the standard edition. I just got the sims 4 today and I think its better than ever! I hope they make the sims 4 pets one day!
Just my opinion! :D Let alone I am only 14 yrs old. xD
For me, the Sims 4 is like a kiddie game. They make it out to be this perfect game, where the gameplay is great and innovative. Unfortunately, it's not. I play it with my 6 year old niece because she loves the look of it and it's easier to make sims in CAS.
I got bored with the game a month after it came out. There was nothing to do and I hated having to travel around neighborhoods and having to use loading screens for everything. It's so bare bones that this game should be the demo. The neighborhoods are tiny. I hate it. Also all the normal features in the game like hot tubs have to be bought instead. If you paying up to $60 for this game and then having to spend $10+ for hot tubs that should be free.
All the game and stuff packs are ridiculously overpriced for so little content. Even with an expansion pack and game and stuff packs the game gets boring and monotonous really quickly. No pools and toddlers pissed me off. It's creepy having a baby turn into a child. I love generations and legacy gameplay. So much for that. I thought the Sims 4 was supposed to be better than the Sims 3. Turns out it's worse. It's like playing the Sims 1 with better graphics but the old gameplay.
Can somebody tell me why we need another party expansion like Get Together when we have so many parties and stuff in the base game? Why not a University or Seasons or better yet Generations expansion or something to make the game more enjoyable. I think I'll stick to playing the Sims 2 & 3 until they actually fix this base game (demo version is what I think it is) regularly.
I have never played any Sims games, but I'm strongly considering buying Sims 3. I would buy Sims 4, but it's way too expensive right now. Would it be worth buying the Sims 3? Or should I wait until the Sims 4 pricing goes down...
3 is cheaper and lots of fun. Maybe just start with playing that and later on when you get sick of it play 4.
I have been playing The Sims (1), 2, 3 and now 4. I loved ts2 and i felt SO disappointed when I got ts3. I hated it basically... Ts2 was SO much better than ts3, but now ts4 has blown me away. I love it so much, i only wish for more of ts2 type game featured in it :-)
Im still playing Sims 3, because of all the expansions, that gave way too much experiences and playing time, and I feel like Sims 4 is a downgrade, taking away good functions and stuff, just my opinion :D
I like the sims 4 more than the sims 3 because of its graphics and create a sim but i wish they wouldn't have removed some of the features that the sims 3 had like the controls because i have a mac and it's way harder to use the controls now! I am a bit disapointed on what they created but i still enjoy the game!
Sims 4 is okay...I just miss what Sims 3 offered with the wide world, seasons, world travel, pets AND especially toddlers!! Toddlers were my favorite thing in Sims T.T They were so cute. The developers lied to consumers and got lazy. They could make toddlers. They lied and said there wouldn't be pools, and come out later with pools and ghosts. They lied about the offline mode with the gallery, and fixed that later. Why the heck can't they make toddlers?? I don't want to wait until Sims 5 comes out and get toddlers. The Create A Sim feature is nice though...made a lot of unique sims of celebrities and it's a lot easier...just really mostly bummed about toddlers and not having a lot of room to explore the world.
Go have real babies then. Think of it as the most realistic Sims ever.
Hahaha!! I don't know why I thought that was so funny
Developers didn't lie. They said their wouldn't be pools. But they didn't say their wouldn't be pools PERMANENTLY did they? Have a think about that. And toddlers cost money and are annoying little gits.I hate them, glad there were none.
And this is why, my friend, kids are afraid to be around you.
well i am a simmer my self have been play the original sims since it was release and have all sims 2 expansion pack as well as sims 3 then did play sims 4 traveling from next door neighbor you have to wait for loading screen same as sims 2 but sim 3 doesnt have loading screen at all. sims 4 have small neighbor not same as sims 2 and sims 3 wich have more big neighborhood.
sometime i play all 3 sims so enjoy sims games hope there more expansion on sims 4.Oh! So Willow Creek,Oasis Springs,Newcrest,Magnolia Promenade and Granite Falls aren't good enough for you? Especially Newcrest a 15 space neighbourhood were you actually make the buildings in it.That's 5 neighbourhoods, all their really missing is weather/seasons and things.
No they're not big enough. They're super tiny with very few lots and the worlds can't be edited. You get 5 tiny neighborhoods with a dozen loading screens.
I have sims 4 now, and it really isn't great. Smaller towns and, well, $60 of mY MONEY wasted!!!!!
Sticking with Sims 3 thanks.. S4 sounds like a downgrade.. Way to ruin the Sims!!
Hi.
I am really so disappointed about TS4 game. This is similar like TS2 game just much better improved graphics. The TS4 game is very childish game. Why in the game are not toddlers?
You spoke of how great the game is. Very similar to real life. But as the saying is very childish game. It would be better to do even what better supplement for TS3 game. In the game TS4 I just like how you can draw near to the camera when fix Sim. I also like the construction of houses and swimming pools.
I wish you all Happy Easter and a wonderful day by day. And I wish you all a good mood and success in making TS4 game.Sims 3 is so advanced in comparison to Sims4 that it's a wonder everyone who purchased the Sims4 in Sept 2014 hasn't returned it and demanded a refund. Sims4 is so inadequate on so many levels that one simply can't understand why they released it in the first place!

Think you need a new computer then. I have every single expansion and stuff pack, plus a bunch of store content. My neighborhoods run smoothly, no crashes or problems traveling between neighborhoods, and it is in no way ' the patchwork Frankenstein’s monster of video games'. Please reevaluate and try going in with an open mind this time, cause this article was obviously written in favor of the sims 4. Its not a comparison, its basically a celebrity roast.
I have played sims 3 and sims 4, but I can tell, that Sims 3 is way more fun to play, than sims 4. My worst disappointed was the lack of family tree. I just love to follow a family and play, generations, after generations and so on. Nope, Sims 4 have better graphic, simplier tools to build a house and create a person is easier. But just the gameplay is lost in sims 4.
I stick with Sims 3.
Added family trees. Get To Work kind of upgraded the gameplay and Outdoor Retreat did it a bit. You clearly haven't played Sims 4 in a long time as the game is slowly getting better.Just don't get Cool Kitchen Stuff and Luxury Party stuff. The rest is pretty good.
I pre ordered it and I am ready to try it out at 11pm tonight. I am okay with no toddlers, bummed a little about the pools and create a style. I hope the other changes make up.for that. But in the grand scheme.of things, if it sucks, oh well. I'm.sure my kids will.love it and I can try again 6 months from now
It looks exactly the same to me. Any new fun i might get out of it would be from expansions i recon. It does however bother me that missions in both sims 3 and sims medieval had huge bugs that made missions impossible to finish.
There was a bug making the adventure storyline in champs le sims in the travel expansion to sims 3 come to a screaching halt with a broken ghouststory and a mission in sims medieval where there was supposed to be the king had a marriage. Unfortubatelly the arranging of marriage was impossible and all work that went into it obsolete. Both mentioned bugs have been met by many and can be reproduced still to this day together with more.
I dont like games that dont work or games that are exactly like the previous one and i dont like having to buy twenty expansions to my game,. EA is clearly just in it for a quick buck. Sadly..
I enjoyed sims 3, it was something new then. This one, so far seems like mostly the same but less.. Same emotes, same ambitions.I've just gleefully uninstalled my sims 3 games in anticipation for sims 4. I got so so so bored with sims 3, not sure if this was just me or not but I never got bored with sims 2. I have high hopes for sims 4.
No create a style? That's a deal breaker right there, a lot of the fun I had was in creating custom styles for countertops, furniture, and clothes.
I can already foresee the micro transactions for reskins of furniture and what not. (Gotta milk you that poor cash cow!)
Really though, Sims 4 launches with... Just the basics, for $70?
Where as in Sims 3 I have pets, a university, generations, seasons, all the fun stuff I'll just be feeling is lacking.
I'll sit on this one for a couple years and wait until enough expansions come out it's worth the hard drive space, and then buy the base game + expansion double/triple pack at a discount like they offered with Sims 3 a while after release.
Hopefully by then create a style will be added back in.
First of all, amazing article, well written, good points. Now, onto my point of view.
As a hardcore simmer since the 2nd grade (yeah, a bit young for a teen rated game, but I was a mature kid with a want for a game like the Sims, a few nights where I would beg my mom, and she finally agreed), I have always loved seeing how the Sims team can improve the game, or the opposite. I absolutely ADORE the new CAS for the Sims 4. Sculpting my sims however I want is something I have wanted since the Sims 2 came out. Sure, there is no sign of CASt, but I can live without it. Sure, as I play the Sims 4 CAS demo, I get a bit annoyed no clothing choices I like to go with an item, but once again, I CAN live without it as long as there are different coloring options. Now, no toddlers or pools hit me a bit harder. No toddlers; I have always loved those joys instead of burrito baby. I loved having their grandparents teaching them how to walk or talk, or taking a home video of them with their parents. But, the new babies in TS4 have limbs, clothes, and all sorts of good things, BUT they must stay in or right in front of the crib, which will tick me off. No pools; POOLS ARE NOT A NECESSITY. I realize, yes, they are amazing fun factors, but once again, I can live without them. Yes, I loved having pool parties or having the kiddies slide down the water slides into the huge pool, but they ARE NOT a necessity. I am very disappointed, yes, but you still have to think about the positives. CAS, emotions, the TWO (very excited the Sims 4 base game comes with TWO new worlds, unlike TS3 coming with only the very plain Sunset Valley) beautiful worlds, flawless game performance, and so much more to come. I will not be pre-ordering, as I want to see the players' reaction first, but as you can tell, I am VERY excited and looking forward to be using up weeks, days, hours, and even just minutes embracing this ALL NEW game play packed into the Sims 4.I have been a die hard simmer for about 14 years and I remember the progression from The Sims to The Sims 2, then 2 to 3 (with all the expansions in between) and how totally fricking amazed I was over the interesting things that were always happening in my virtual world. I still have all my discs that never get used once a new one comes out.. but I display my collection on a shelf proudly, because I love the franchise. I have spent countless hours, days, nights.. stolen minutes.. just fiddling around. Does it suck theres no toddlers and pools.. sure I guess so. Honestly though the toddlers and pools don't make or break the game. I don't remember the last time I put a Sim into a pool. I even stopped building them because I couldn't keep the Sims out of it. Also, I ALWAYS aged up my toddlers the second they learned to talk, walk, use the potty and master the pegs/xylophone. People want them that bad there's nothing stopping them from playing the games they already have. I'm sad over create a style being gone.. but oh well. Bring on emotions! Show me the NEW things there is to do in this NEW GAME. I preordered mine and I can't wait till September 2nd! So excited. If it flops like the Sims Medieval did, (which I so highly doubt it will.. be real, it looks awesome) I'm sure I'll still play it sometimes too. Love me some pit beast. Great article, very well written.
After reading this article and many other on the Sims 4, I have decided that I will be sticking with the Sims 3.
lol. Just saying, you might as well try the sims 4. I also think the sims 3 is better, but it's a good game overall.
I've put so much time and money and love into The Sims 3, I'm definetly going to wait. If it genuinely looks better, even without toddlers, pools, create-a-style and some bits from the expansions I don't know how I lived without, then I'll get it. But really, I always make my Sim hotter than me IRL. And I can spend five minutes moving my rooms. It's a pain, but at least I can chill in my pool and make a butler look after my toddler. If it is better, I will NOT miss saving every five minutes in case it crashes. Good luck, EA
After the the many bugs that Sims 3 gave us I swore I wasn't going to buy Sims 4. But as any true Sim addict I started seeing some of the videos and promos and thought maybe I should give it a chance. I saw that the Create- A -Sim demo came out and downloaded it. Oh I am so glad I did. I realized that I would in fact miss the Create A Style and when I when I heard no toddlers or swimming pools that was it. I am done. Its so upsetting since I was a Sim fan from the very start. However the product I get for my dollars is spreading thinner and thinner and with so many unresolved bugs and glitches they are leaving in Sims 3 it gives me little hope for this new reboot. I am incredulous that people are voicing the same concerns and are still going to run out and buy it. If they really wanted things fixed they would show it by not giving EA their dollars.
Everyone has every right to be sceptical after Sims 3 and SimCity 2013. Personally, I could never get on Sims 3 but I loved Sims 2.
I'd just wait for it to come down in price, give them a chance to hopefully bring back pools and toddlers, iron out a few launch bugs, and then decide from there.
Bet a DLC for the Sims 4 will feature swimming... :) Maybe even toddlers?
You never know, Horace. I could see them patching it in later for free to get some 'Look! We listened to you!' good press. I'm still more bent out of shape about the loss of Create-A-Style. I've spent hours matching colors and textures to get exactly the sims and houses I want when I play the game on Twitch.
Link in my MakeUseOf author profile if you ever want to watch any of that.
You forgot the biggest new 'feature' - the online component of Sims 4 won't work right for at least 6 months. :)
The good news is that whatever online function they had planned was apparently scaled down in the face of the Simcity backlash. Seems like the biggest function will be something along the lines of Spore's Sporepedia, allowing you to drop sims and houses into your game with ease. If that's broken at launch, it's hardly a deal breaker for the whole game I think.
Meh... I'm taking advantage of all the Sims 4 hype to pick up the remaining Sims 3 expansions at a discount :D
I own all of The Sims 3 expansions, and I don't regret it. I thought Into the Future was a particularly high note to go out on. So many great references to varied sci-fi genres. Enjoy!
