Alienware Hdmi Not Working
Alienware Laptop, HDMI-IN not working I, too, have this issue. Last year, around December 2013, I was successfully able to plug in my friend's xbox 360 and play Call of Duty on my laptop via HDMI. However, recently, I tried to use HDMI in port again, but I couldn't get it to work and it kept stating 'please connect HDMI input Device'. Nov 14, 2013 Haven't tested the cable on the TV yet but I would expect the same results. So it works with monitors but not TVs? Only one event may of caused this to happen and that was when I installed an SSD. Other than that, HDMI out port was working fine! If anyone has any kind of solution, I'm up for giving them a try.Model: Alienware M17XR3.

I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 in my Alienware 14 (july-2013) laptop.
Apparently there is no sound from speakers, however when I connect headphones sound is perfect through them.
I've tried to purge-remove-reinstall alsa drivers and pulseaudio, and still no sound. I even tried some solution I found through this site related to adding the following:
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (I also tried with generic, Intel, dell and ref) and no luck whatsoever. I also tried updating to the latest kernel (3.12) and still without sound coming out from the speakers. Volume controls are all un-muted, I checked it as well.
Any suggestion?
This is the output for the command aplay -l

I finally managed to solve it somehow. I added this two lines to alsa-base.conf (and also enabling auto-mute in alsa-mixer):
After rebooting, sound is working from the speakers.
